  • Emily Goodwin - Interim Head of School & Exposition Teacher

    Emily has a background in various different educational pedagogies, however she discovered that when the ancient classical pedagogy is combined with time spent in the fine arts and outdoors miracles happen for students. This discovery led her to be the founder of Sardis. She holds an associates degree in education, a bachelors degree in Christian Ministry, and various certificates and trainings in leadership development, curriculums, and academic pedagogies. She loves to help students learn to love the English language and utilize this love to become proficient writers. As a mom to three children with various learning challenges, she especially loves to see children that struggle begin to thrive. Emily is a self-proclaimed old soul and loves to read, write, knit, and make things from scratch that would be far easier to buy at the store. She has been married to her husband Nick since 2004 and is mom to four boys. They live on a small homestead in Athens with a menagerie of animals.

  • Jackie VanHorn - Academic Dean & Upper Grammar School Teacher

    Mrs. VanHorn has been a part of the Sardis staff since its founding. She immediately became a mentor to the other teachers. She is a gifted teacher and a talented leader. Jackie is the wife of Rex and mom to four outgoing kids. Her oldest will graduate this year. Jackie homeschooled her children since 2010 when her oldest was in Kindergarten. She found the classical education model early, has taught it for nine years, and has seen the benefits. She is passionate about helping other families discover the beauty that comes from the classical model. Jackie holds a bachelors degree in business from Ohio Dominican University. Her family has a small menagerie at home with some small critters. She enjoys taking care of them and being outside, listening to nature. Jackie also loves walking and spending time with Rex and their family.

  • Brittany Malicoat - Administrative Assistant

    Mrs. Malicoat was born and raised in Elkhart, Indiana. After high school she went to Valparaiso University on scholarship to play volleyball where she received accolades for being an honorable mention All- American. She received a degree in Public Relations and Art History with a minor in Social Work. After College she worked in the medical field in various roles of office administration. In 2013 Brittany began a new chapter of being a stay at home mom. She is a mother to 4 children and enjoys worship music, loose leaf tea & coffee as well as all things home decor.

  • Rachel McClure

    GRAMMAR SCHOOL TEACHER

    Mrs. McClure loves watching children discover the world around them as they are introduced to the foundations of learning that will carry them throughout their lives. She graduated from the University of Georgia with a Bachelor's degree in Early Childhood Education and worked as a teacher in Clarke County schools for three years prior to having children of her own. Once becoming a mother, she and her husband, Matt, chose for her to stay at home to care for and educate their children, a decision she wouldn't change for the world. Their three children are students at Sardis and have grown tremendously from the support and accountability that they receive there. Rachel and her family regularly attend Living Hope Church, serving in the areas of the Children's Ministry and Worship. She loves to sing, work and play outside, swim, bake bread, crochet, drink hot tea, and spend time with family and friends.

  • Stephanie Peacock

    GRAMMAR SCHOOL TEACHER

    Mrs. Peacock is married to an amazing husband and the mother to six wonderful children. They all attend Living Hope Church, where her husband Geoffrey is on staff. She homeschooled all her children giving her ten years worth of homeschooling/ teaching experience before feeling called back to the medical field. After being a CMA at UAB hospital in Birmingham, Alabama for four years, the Lord sent her to Athens, GA and blessed them with a new bundle of joy. With this new addition, Mrs. Peacock felt called to return to teaching and to continue her journey of educating children on a Christian foundation. Sardis gave her the perfect environment to do so.

  • Heather Touchet

    UPPER SCHOOL HUMANITIES, EXPOSITION, & RHETORIC TEACHER

    As a child, Mrs. Touchet’s curiosity of the world around her grew with each literary novel read and each history lesson learned. History, reading, and tying both to God is now a passion of hers and being able to share this through educating students is an absolute joy. Mrs. Touchet lives in Commerce, GA with her husband, Brennon, of almost 7 years and their two daughters, Adeline and Elise, with another daughter coming in October. She is originally from Louisiana where she learned not all smoked sausage is the same and what you put in your gumbo matters. She graduated from LA Tech University with a Bachelor’s degree in Speech Communications and a minor in History. Eventually, she went through an alternate program to become certified to teach and taught for three years before choosing to stay home with her kids. In her spare time, Mrs Touchet enjoys spending time with her family, reading, hiking with her family, and finding historical inaccuracies in film.

  • Danae Madrid

    UPPER SCHOOL MATH & SCIENCE TEACHER

    Mrs. Madrid joined our staff for our inaugural academic year after moving with her family from California to be a part of what we are building. She was born and raised in the central valley of California. She grew up watching the local college football team that was coached by her dad and grandpa, among others. She comes from a rich Christian heritage that values family, tradition, and the home. Always being interested in the sciences, she received her bachelor's of science from UC Santa Barbara in Biochemistry, then went on to earn her master's degree from San Diego State University in Chemistry, with an emphasis in organic chemistry. After doing ministry for a year in Turkey, she met a handsome engineer, Phillip, doing campus ministry in France. After moving back to the states, they married in her hometown. She worked as an Associate Professor of Chemistry on a collegiate level at Allan Hancock College in Santa Maria, California. She is excited to be building a competitive math and science program at Sardis. After having 3 children and learning about Classical Christian education, they moved to Athens, Georgia, in part, to help start Sardis. Her husband is on the board of directors and she lives in Bogart with her husband and three children, serves in the college ministry at her church, and is always surprising us with one of her many hidden and varied talents.

  • Alyssa Metzdorf

    LATIN & ART TEACHER

    Alyssa Metzdorf attended college at UGA, graduating in 2022 with a degree in Linguistics. She now lives in Athens with her husband Trevor Metzdorf, who also graduated from UGA and is pursuing a career at the UGAPD. Alyssa and Trevor met while attending Hebron Church in Dacula, GA. When they both moved to Athens for college, they began attending Phoenix Community of Athens, which was planted by two pastors from Hebron Church. In her spare time, Alyssa loves to read, cook, bake, play video games, and make crafts. Alyssa attended Oak Hill Classical School from grades 1-10, where she developed a deep appreciation for the classical model of education and started learning Latin in 3rd grade. She has always had a fascination with languages, which is part of what led to her decision to major in linguistics. She continued to study Latin in college, as well as picking up French, and a bit of Ancient Greek and Korean. She is excited to put her years of language practice to use in the Latin classroom, now not only as a student, but as a teacher as well.

  • Paul Whaley

    BIBLE & MUSIC TEACHER

    Paul was born in Bainbridge, Georgia. He earned a Bachelor of Arts in religious studies at the University of Georgia where he studied church history, theology, and Hebrew among other subjects. After graduating he worked as a worship and youth pastor in Washington for a year before returning to Georgia. He is currently the worship leader at Faith Presbyterian Church in Watkinsville and working towards a master’s degree in music education at UGA.

  • Regina Nasrallah

    AGRARIAN TEACHER

    Regina has been affectionately nicked “Mrs. Naz” by the students. She holds both a Bachelor of Science and Arts in Geography from the University of Georgia where she focused her studies on urban geography, climatology, and community development. She led the students through the massive task of transforming a weedy courtyard into the thriving urban garden it is today during our inaugural year. Mrs. Naz was also classically homeschooled which is where she developed her love for nature and cultivating old-fashioned skills. When she isn’t growing produce in the Sardis garden, Mrs. Naz can be found baking sourdough, playing tennis, and serving at her church, Saint Philothea Orthodox Church. She also recently got married in May 2023 and currently lives in Athens with her husband and cat.
